SHANE

Istifled a yawn as I went inside from the backyard. Theo just tried his best to jump from a tree and onto his skateboard, but he’d had a few too many drinks and just ended up flat on his back with the wind knocked out of him. The moon was high, and the air was cool. Alex and I had been together most of the night, but then he said he needed to check on something and I went to find Theo.

Winding my way through the house again, I kept my eyes peeled for Alex’s figure. Where had he wandered off to? It was nice being with him, but part of me wondered if this was what I should have been doing. If I should have just forgotten about whatever we’d done and found someone else, someone more casual to enjoy the night with.

The idea of it made my stomach turn. Normally I didn’t care, but thinking about Alex’s disappointed face was too much. Not that I wanted to try anyone else for the night. It was complicated.

I turned the corner and was met with the sight of Alex rubbing Brad’s back, who was all hunched over in the hallway. I frowned for a moment, trying to figure out what was up. Alex kept rubbing his back, talking in quiet tones to him like he was trying to soothe him.

“Is he okay?” I approached.

Alex glanced up at me and nodded a little. “He’s just had a little too much to drink.”

Brad looked at me — or tried to, at least. His smile was lopsided and his eyes were sort of unfocused. “Shaney….hey…did I fuck up?” he asked, half laughing, half stumbling, even though he had been standing still.

I shook my head. “No, Brad. You’re just drunk.” I didn’t know what he meant, but I figured it was better to reassure him. No one needed him yakking all over the floor or whining about something no one understood. This was bad enough. Brad might not have been drunk as often as some of his fellow Lambdas, but that didn’t mean much.

Alex steadied him, holding onto his arm. “It’s okay, man. How about we try to get you somewhere to lie down for a bit?” His voice was all sweet and kind and calm.

This was a side of Alex I hadn’t seen before. Sure, sometimes he could be gentle and sweet when we were in bed, but this was different. He was taking care of Brad, looking out for his wellbeing and making sure he wouldn’t make a complete mess of himself.

I didn’t know he had that part to him. Maybe that was dumb — he’d shown it in more subtle ways before. Every time I turned around, it seemed like there was something else to discover about him. About how he cared so much for people, how he was a genuinely nice person despite the things he’d been through. Maybe even because of them, at least partly.

Following them, I brought up the rear as Alex guided Brad to his room.
